Electricity Demand in Quezon City, Philippines |
Meralco energy sales and electricity sales volume trends |

For Quezon City households, Meralco energy sales offer a window into how the wider power market is changing.
Across Meralco’s distribution network, electricity sales volume reached 35,938 gigawatt-hours from January through August 2026, up just 0.7% from a year earlier.
That modest gain does not mean every neighborhood used more electricity.
New customer connections helped lift overall sales even as cooler weather softened demand among existing customers.
More connections, rather than a broad surge in usage, made the difference.
For residents of Quezon City, the distinction matters when judging headlines about electricity demand.
Network-wide figures cover Metro Manila and nearby provinces, so they cannot establish whether consumption rose or fell in the city itself.
A household’s bill also depends on its own usage and electricity charges, not simply the utility’s total sales.
That is worth remembering when monthly expenses already feel tight.
Meralco expects demand to continue recovering in the third quarter and projects full-year energy sales growth of 1% to 2%.
Those forecasts point to steady growth, but they leave room for weather and customer behavior to shape the final result.
Meanwhile, the distribution utility remained the company’s biggest earnings contributor in the first half of 2026.
It accounted for P12.7 billion of Meralco’s P26.5-billion core net income during that period.
Financial strength does not erase the pressure families feel when power costs rise.
With more than 8.2 million customers across its service area, even small shifts in electricity sales volume can signal a meaningful change at scale.
Still, the Quezon City picture is best read with care: city-specific demand figures would be needed to measure local trends.
For now, the clearest story is gradual growth across the wider network, not a proven citywide jump in use. |
